Scout’s Story

It is hard to believe that our family is just two weeks away from celebrating our daughter, Scout’s, 3rd birthday, with the following day being a celebration of Scout’s cancer having been in remission for 1 year. In a little over a week, we would be flying to Hawaii to introduce Scout to the place that we consider home, for the first time in her life. We were excited but still had a few free days between now and then, so we decided to make our final trip of the year to Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Typically, April is the final month that we even consider visiting Anza Borrego, as the heat just gets too extreme after that. Being that Anza Borrego is about a 3 hour drive from us, we prefer to make a few stops along the way. One of our favorite places to stop, now that we have Scout with us, has become the city of Temecula. Temecula is crawling with a plethora of phenomenal, family friendly parks and areas to visit, especially for those with kids.

Scout’s Day at Winchester Creek Park

When Scout was 13 months old, we visited Winchester Creek Park, as we were driving home from a trip to Anza Borrego. Scout had fallen asleep and had not really seemed like her self on this day. Two months later, the life altering diagnosis of her cancer would forever change us. On this day, we had no idea that something so serious could be happening inside of Scout, but looking back on it, these days were the earlier signs of something not being right with Scout.

As we pulled into Winchester Creek Park, Scout fell asleep and I took a glance at the playground and figured we would be back one day, having no idea the trauma and fight that would be in store for us. Not quite two years later, we returned with Scout being in remission and were so amazed at Winchester Creek Park. I feel so grateful for the memories that we were able to make on this day and it was the perfect start to an amazing day, fun packed day.

Scout is almost three, but is a pro at navigating areas of playgrounds that most kids her age may struggle with. She explored every section of the playground at Winchester Creek Playground and she absolutely loved it here.

After enjoying the toddler playground and sliding down the slide more times than I could count, Scout made her way to the big kids playground. She climbed on every structure here including climbing into the kayak and pretending she was on the water (Scout has actually spent a ton of time in real kayaks throughout her short life).

The possibilities for imaginative play at Winchester Creek Park are endless. Eventually, we spent the last half hour helping Scout climb up the rock wall, with its pretend waterfall and mountains.

We could not have asked for a better start to the morning and were excited to see what the rest of the day had in store.
