Overview

West Portal Park is a very nice playground in the city of San Francisco. The focal point is a Dragon and his head which features a slide coming out from it.

The park is most suitable for younger kids as there are multiple toddler play areas. The toddlers and younger kids will probably enjoy this playground most. Additionally, there is a nice grassy lawn area next to the playground.

Scout’s Story

After a rainy and overcast morning exploring San Francisco, we continued our day by visiting West Portal Park to allow our 14 month old daughter, Scout, to play on the playground for a bit. Scout’s huge smile did not leave her face while we were at the park. After running around for some time, Scout finally made her way to the baby swings, which are typically her favorite thing to do. Her smile was big and she seemed to want to swing so bad but also was acting tired once again, while showing signs of being uncomfortable.

The morning had gone by so well and Scout had seemed to be doing a ton better than the previous day, when she just wasn’t being herself. The next few days would kind of continue the same way. There were times of running and extreme joy and fun and then times where Scout just didn’t seem to have her typical energy.

After returning home a few days later, my wife took Scout to the ER numerous times before we finally got an answer to what was ailing Scout and making her act so different. On August 18th, 2022 Scout, at the age of 15 months old, would receive a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. Her journey and fight against cancer would begin that same day. As I have wrote about so many times, this trip to San Francisco is a little tough for me to look back on. It’s hard to believe that Scout had masses growing inside of her and that we didn’t know that something so serious was happening. It kills me to know that my daughter must have been in so much pain but didn’t have the words to tell us what was wrong.

Scout’s Journey

As we attempt to stay positive, our focus is on short term goals and helping Scout as she undergoes chemo and treatment. Her smile and happiness is ever so present and she is a joy to watch every day. While the memories of this trip are hard to look back on, I do realize that we also had a lot of good moments and I look forward to the day that we can hear the word remission and revisit San Francisco to make new memories.
