Scout’s Story
My wife, myself and our daughter, Scout, decided to take a quick, multi day trip to the fabulous and fun pack city of Santa Barbara as well as the cute Dutch town of Solvang. We were excited to get out of town and enjoy these few days. Scout had finished up her most recent cycle of chemotherapy and her blood counts had reached a point that we were comfortable enough taking this 2 day trip. We would still be doing our best to visit places earlier in the morning and avoid crowds to limit Scout’s exposure to others. It’s hard to believe that not even three months have passed since Scout was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. We are currently awaiting our next steps in her treatment but her spirit is incredible her energy levels have been surprisingly high.
After waking up early and managing to leave the house by 7 AM, we decided to stop at 2 playgrounds near the Thousand Oaks area on our way towards Ventura, which is where we would be staying on this night. The Thousands Oaks area presented us a great spot to get Scout out of the car and to let Scout run around and stretch her legs.
Scout’s Day at Thousand Oaks Community Park
Although our morning started early, the California traffic was ever so present on our drive and it took us nearly 2 hours to reach Thousand Oaks Community Park. Scout was becoming restless in her car seat and we were ready to get out and let her play at the park. We bundled Scout up and headed for the playground. Scout’s first stop was, of course, the baby swings. There were only a few other families at the park but we were able to keep Scout pretty secluded. We talked with a nice family as we pushed Scout in the baby swings and then followed her to the animal play structures. Scout talked and said hi to them before making her way to the “ant hills”.

The “ant hills” are so neat and these play structures have been one of Scout’s favorite things to do at other parks that have them. Scout ran up and down the hills for some time as we watched to make sure she didn’t fall on her central line. Thousand Oaks Community Park ended up being the perfect spot to stop and rest on our way towards Ventura. We were incredibly impressed with the park and were overjoyed to start our morning on such a positive note.
