Overview

Parasol Park is a small but nice neighborhood park located in the beautiful, park heavy city of Irvine. The park is part of the Great Park Neighborhoods Parks. While small, the park is super cute and cozy. A basketball court doubles as a volleyball court and a 4 square court among other games. The playground has a log cabin/fort theme and makes for great imaginative play for the kids. In addition, a fantastic zipline fronts the playground and is rather fast but a heck of a lot of fun. Away from the playground the park features a relaxing sun deck with a ping pong table, lounge chairs and other amenities.

Scout’s Story

Our daughter, Scout, is now currently 2 weeks removed from her most recent treatment of chemo. Her blood counts have continued to be stable and we have been pleasantly surprised by how high Scout’s energy levels have been and how well she has been doing. It’s hard to believe that Scout just turned 18 months old and it’s been 3 months now since she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

My wife and I have been doing the best that we can to get Scout outside as much as possible recently, as that has always been what Scout enjoys most. At times, it has been a bit difficult as we always attempt to find the balance between letting her do normal kid things and keeping her distanced from others so that her weakened immune system isn’t compromised.

Scout’s Day at Parasol Park

On this day, we decided to get an early start and to let Scout play at a few local playgrounds in the amazing , park laden city of Irvine. Parasol Park, is a smaller and quieter park, that perfectly fit what we were looking for on this day. We had no problem letting Scout play here, with only one other mom and her son being present. The playground is small but super cute and Scout managed to explore the forts and clubhouses that it offers in a short period.

Scout’s eyes were then set on the amazing zipline that she had just seen her mom test out. I was surprised at how eager Scout was to go on this, but after she motioned her hands together multiple times (signaling for more) and saying “me too”, my wife finally succumbed and took Scout for a ride.

One ride led to two, which led to more than I could count. Scout’s face lit up with joy and this is how we spend the majority of our time at Parasol Park.

We had such a great time at Parasol Park. I cannot describe enough how mornings like this with Scout, have helped our mental health in such a trying time. It is mind boggling to me how a kid this small, fighting something so severe, can be in such high spirits and bring so much joy to those around her. I have continuously tried to uplift and inspire my baby Scout, but time after time, it continues to be her that instead, uplifts and inspires me.
