Scout’s Story

Recently, my wife and I had decided to take an impromptu trip to Big Bear Lake, to spend a few important days with our daughter Scout. To break up the over 2 hour drive we decided to stop in the awesome city of Corona to let Scout play. We have visited Corona tons of times and absolutely enjoy visiting. With its plethora of great playgrounds, it was a no brainer for us to stop here on the way to Big Bear. This small trip and these few days were immensely important to my wife and I. Our main goal would be to take these days to really focus on our daughter Scout and to have a special time.

After almost nine months of treatment and multiple cycles of chemotherapy, Scout was finally approved for tumor resection surgery on April 24, 2023. After more than 8 hours of surgery to remove the right half of her liver and the tumor in her rectum, Scout’s cancer would be placed into remission a few weeks later on May 8th, one day after her second birthday. A month later Scout’s central line would be removed as well. Our family is currently transitioning back into normal life as Scout’s Oncology team monitors her progress with visits every 2 months. This trip was a big step for us in getting back to doing the things that were once so commonplace to us but had become a rarity since Scout’s diagnosis.

Scout’s Day at Cresta Verde Park

My wife, our daughter, Scout, and I were incredibly excited to get on the road. We would be spending the next few days in Big Bear at a friend of ours, who offered for us to use his cabin there. Exactly one year ago, on August 16, 2022, upon a trip to the emergency room, doctors discovered multiple masses in Scout’s 15 month old body. Two days later, on August 18, Scout would be diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and her fight towards remission would begin. My wife and I wanted to make sure to make the most of the 1 year anniversary of these life altering dates. We would take these days to get away and to really be alone as a family and reflect on Scout’s journey.

After getting an early start, we made a quick start at a nearby park before heading to Cresta Verde Park. Throughout Scout’s treatment, trains have remained one of her favorite things. We figured there couldn’t be a better way to start the trip than to stop at a train playground. We made the short walk from the parking lot and Scout started exploring the small playground. I chased Scout around as she repeatedly enjoyed playing in the tunnel crawler and on the slide. We slowly realized that stopping here probably wasn’t the best idea. The horrid August heat was getting the best of all of us. At this point, the equipment on the playground was steadily becoming scorching hot.
