Overview

Beacon Hill Park is a small, 5 acre park. However, it includes a sprawling lawn area with tons of space to run and play or to have a picnic. Located in a nice and safe neighborhood in beautiful Laguna Niguel, a visit here can quickly be followed up with a trip to the nearby beaches that are a leisurely 10-15 minute drive away. The main attraction of the park is the red, white, and blue ocean themed playground, with its focal point being a lighthouse. Although small, the playground is very unique and kids will thoroughly enjoy it. Additionally, there is a picnic area adjacent to the playground.

There are signs warning of rattlesnakes in the immediate surrounding bushes and vegetation, so it’s a good idea to watch your kids and make sure they are aware. If threatened, rattlesnakes will defend themselves, but by giving them space and respect they can continue to fulfill their vital role in our ecosystem.

Scout’s Story

As the summer was just getting started, we decided to take advantage of the unseasonably nice weather. The next day, our daughter, Scout, would be having yet another surgical procedure and we wanted to take her to enjoy this day before what we knew would be a tough day for her. We had been waiting for a good day to visit the pirate tower in Laguna Beach. The low tide lined up with the early hours of the morning and we headed out for Victoria Beach in Laguna. My family absolutely loves the Laguna area. My wife and I decided that we would just make a day of hanging out there, taking our daughter, Scout, to some parks after visiting the pirate tower.

Our second to last stop of the day would be at Beacon Hill Park in Laguna Niguel. Scout really enjoyed the spring jumpers and just running around the main structure of the playground. One of the things I enjoy most about bringing Scout to playgrounds is watching her development. During our visit I was surprised when Scout asked me to put her on the regular bench swing. Previously she had only ever used the baby swings. I put Scout onto the swing and watched, curious as to what she would do. I was shocked when I saw that she was swinging by herself for the first time ever.

This was an awesome experience for us and we ended up loving our time at Beacon Hill Park.

Scout’s Journey

Being able to be outside and enjoy moments at the park is beyond description. Exactly one month ago, on May 8th, Scout’s cancer was declared in remission. Scout underwent a tumor resection surgery on her liver and rectum area on April 24th. On May 5th we arrived home from the hospital and on May 7th Scout turned 2 years old. The day after her birthday, her cancer would be declared in remission with final confirmation from her tumor pathology. This journey, from the onset of her stage 4 diagnosis almost a year ago, has been such a life altering experience.

We know Scout’s battle isn’t quite over but we are also hopeful that Scout is nearing the tail end of this fight. In addition to all of the other good news, this was officially our last day of doing twice daily injections into Scout’s legs. The following day, Scout would be going into surgery to have her central line removed from her chest. This also meant no more daily flushing and locking of her lines and that within a week of healing, she would be able to finally get back into submerged water (and sand) and get wet without fear of infection. So much has happened so fast, but we are excited to move forward and watch Scout grow without having to deal with this debilitating disease and its treatment anymore.
