Overview
The somewhat secluded but extremely nice, Avenue Park, is tucked into the back of a quiet neighborhood, in Avocado Heights, California. The first thing one notices upon entering the park is the huge, amazing skate park that graces the grounds. While there is a little bit of lawn area, it is rather small, but the park makes up for the lack of grassy areas with everything else it offers. A large picnic area is located in the back of the park, with barbecues and picnic tables that are provided with shade from the local trees. The highlight of the park is the incredible, all inclusive, western themed playground. Multiple wagons, connected by ramps and walkways, form a fantastic play area for kids of all abilities. This is a super relaxing and peaceful park with a huge playground that offers enough variety to keep kids entertained all day.

Scout’s Story
Our daughter, Scout, was now almost exactly 1 month outside of completing her most recent cycle of chemotherapy. Scout, at the young age of 18 months old, has been battling stage 4 cancer (Germ Cell Neoplasm) for over 3 months now. Scout has come a long way in these past few months and we are very hopeful that she will prevail in this battle. We are currently at a stand still in Scout’s treatment. Currently, our main delay is awaiting P.E.T. scans that have been a little tough to get accomplished so far. However, her blood counts have slowly climbed up in a positive direction, and we felt comfortable enough on this day to head outside. Our goal was to visit a few parks while still doing our best to keep her safe and isolated from others.
Scout’s Day at Avenue Park
After spending the early morning at Smith Park, my wife and I made our way with Scout to Avenue Park. I was once again very surprised that the park was completely empty, except for a few skateboarders. Avenue Park caught me by surprise. I was blown away by how expansive the playgrounds were and even more so, I was shocked by how many different play options kids had to choose from. Accordingly, Scout found plenty to do here. She ran up and down the walkways through each of the wagons, stopping only to come down the roller slide.
Eventually, Scout made her way to the big playground, but as usual, it proved to be a little too advanced for a 18 month old. However, she did very well overall and we helped her maneuver a lot of the sections as she chose to come down the slide time and time again. This was yet another great opportunity for us to get outside of the isolation of our house and to enjoy some time with Scout in a safe outdoor environment. We finished our day at Avenue Park in the picnic area, letting Scout swing on the plastic tire swing.
All in all, we had a fantastic family day at Avenue Park. As a matter of fact, I even mentioned to my wife how Avenue Park would be perfect to have a family party for Scout one day.
