Overview
Located directly off the Pacific Coast highway in Ventura County, Point Mugu missile park is an accessible lot just in front of the Naval Air Station. An assortment of missiles and planes that have been tested at Point Mugu since World War II awaits those visiting. The biggest attractions are the 2 mounted jets, an F-4 Phantom and a F-14 Tomcat.
In addition, the Regulus I, Regulus II and Polaris missile are a big draw.
This typically quiet park is a great chance to check out the history of Point Mugu Naval Air Station. Over the years, the missiles and planes have been refurbished and everything has been well taken care of. The entirety of the park can be toured in less than ten minutes for those with a lack of time. Enthusiasts may be able to spend as much as an hour scouring the small grounds.
Scout’s Story
Point Mugu Missile Park is a site that has intrigued me and that I’ve wanted to visit for years. Being that my wifes mom has lived in Ventura, we consequently have visited this area a ton over the years. Every time that we have driven past on the Pacific Coast Highway, I have glanced over with curiosity and thought, we have to stop and visit this place one day. Finally, after years, today would be the day.
We had left from visiting my mother and father in law and had got an early start on our drive. Our daughter, Scout, was now almost 2 years old and our plan was to make a few stops and let her play along the way home.
We had just recently been informed that Scout had been approved for tumor resection surgery on cancerous tumors that were in her liver and rectum. We knew that this would be a good day to get out and do some things before we moved forward with these next crucial steps in her cancer treatment.
While the missile park may not be intriguing or age appropriate for younger kids, they will nonetheless enjoy running around here and glancing in curiosity at the huge structures here. We spent probably about 20 minutes or so and our daughter had a great time just running around. Scout finds airplanes very interesting so I think she actually enjoyed the park more than I was expecting.
This was a great quick stop to start our day and was nice to finally check out something that I had been passing by and wondering about for so many years.
